چکیده

A new solution for building high power, solid state lasers for space flight is to fabricate the whole laser resonator in a single (monolithic) structure or alternatively to build a contiguous diffusion bonded or welded structure. Monolithic lasers provide numerous advantages for space flight solid-state lasers by minimizing misalignment concerns. The closed cavity is immune to contamination. The number of components is minimized thus increasing reliability. Bragg mirrors serve as the high reflector and output coupler thus minimizing optical coatings and coating damage. The Bragg mirrors also provide spectral and spatial mode selection for high fidelity. The monolithic structure allows short cavities resulting in short pulses. Passive saturable absorber Q-switches provide a soft aperture for spatial mode filtering and improved pointing stability. We will review our recent commercial and in-house developments toward fully monolithic solid-state lasers.

Wavelength Selectable Solid-State Raman lasers in the Visible and Ultraviolet Ranges

Solid-state Raman lasers are known as important sources at normally difficult to access wavelengths, and our recent studies have shown that they also form the basis of a class of wavelength selectable lasers. This paper summarizes our recent studies in wavelength selectable Raman lasers in the visible (532-650 nm) and ultraviolet (266-321 nm).

DBR and DFB lasers in neodymium- and ytterbium-doped photothermorefractive glasses.

The first demonstration, to the best of our knowledge, of distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and monolithic distributed feedback (DFB) lasers in photothermorefractive glass doped with rare-earth ions is reported. The lasers were produced by incorporation of the volume Bragg gratings into the laser gain elements. A monolithic single-frequency solid-state laser with a linewidth of 250 kHz and outp...

High-power monolithic unstable-resonator solid-state laser.

We report the operation of a diode-pumped monolithic Q-switched unstable-resonator solid-state laser that generates 2.15-mJ, 2-ns pulses in a single transverse mode and a single longitudinal mode. We show that the unstable resonator is effective in suppressing the spatial and the temporal instability of the laser beam in a disk-shaped laser whose transverse dimension is comparable with or large...

Picosecond laser pulse generation in a monolithic self-Q-switched solid-state laser

We report the generation of laser pulses of 290-ps duration with 8-N pulse energy in single longitudinal mode and single transverse mode in a diode-end-pumped monolithic self-Q-switched Cr,Nd:YAG laser. The most commonly used method of generating picosecond laser pulses is the mode-locking technique. Mode-locking generally requires a light modulator such as an intracavity acousto-optical modula...

Monolithic 2D-VCSEL array with > 2W CW and > 5W pulsed output power - Electronics Letters

The ability to fabricate monolithic two-dimensional (2D) diode laser arrays is a key step towards making high-power lasers at low cost, because the manufacture of such laser arrays eliminates labour-intensive fabrication and packaging [ 11. The surface-normal topology of the vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) makes it ideally suited to the formation of 2D arrays for high power appli...
